A curse on the lands of Barovia that has existed for longer than anyone living knows, the origin of which is a mystery.
According to the Martikovs, it may be related to a "forgotten sin" of Strahd's. Strahd himself is unhappy about the curse, and Madame Eva believes that he keeps the land going by some unknown magic.
There is a rumor of the Morning Lord somehow losing power, but his followers do not believe it. Father Donovich has said that Mother Night is possibly involved with the curse, but he does not know anything else about her. He also referred to his vampire son as "touched by the curse," although this may have been just a turn of phrase.
Some people, such as the Watchers, do not believe in the curse at all, although they acknowledge that Mother Night may be at the root of whatever is wrong with Barovia. Their father, Nikolaj Wachter, claimed that, "giving Strahd unlife is what brought the curse upon the land."
Madame Eva has stated that the curse does not come from Mother Night, while Savid told us that oftentimes only the one who is cursed knows its exact origin and parameters.
It is likely related to the mysterious poem that is heard on the roof of Argynvostholt. It could also be related to the phrase "I am the ancient, I am the land," spoken by Strahd himself and refered to by the cultists in Death House.
The Abbott intends to break the curse by marrying Vasilka to Strahd, although Strahd himself is unaware of these plans.
After the kidnapping of Ireena Kolyana, Percy used Divination to inquire about the nature of the curse and learned that it was unlikely to change.
