One of the original protectors and guardians of the Amber Temple, about whom Percy read in one of the books in the Baron's library. He is now located in one of the secret rooms of the Temple, in a chamber which is lavishly decorated but covered in cobwebs, and appears as a skeleton with glowing red eyes wearing wizard robes. He owned a magical book called The Incants of Exethanter, but after some convincing, he gave it to Percy.

He claimed to have forgotten his purpose for being in the Temple, and to have had no visitors for many years. He said that he could, "recall evil," and "power," but not why or whom.

He granted us permission to explore, but could not guarantee our safety because he could not remember what lay outside his walls. He told Gale that if we could help him remember, he would make sure no thing harmed us inside the walls. Gale vowed to do everything in his power and vowed to return. He thinks Greater Restoration may help.

Brand recognized him when Dren stepped into the room, claiming to be "familiar with this presence in the land." He said he felt like the man had "been here for many years" before he had. Brand also recognized the name from the book, and told Dren that he became "the way we saw him" because he found the secrets in the temple, confirming that the ancient man was indeed Exethanter. Brand stated that at some point, Strahd came to seek counsel and a pact with Exethanter, but he would not or could not make the deal. Dren did not share this with anyone.

A seam in the wall of his chamber leads to a hidden room containing what is likely his phylactery.
