The remnant of an older sword which was broken by Strahd when its owner was killed. Where its blade once was is now a shaft of pure sunlight.

After sitting alone in the tower of Argynvostholt for many years, it gained a measure of sentience. Now that it has been found, its desire is to avenge its former master by killing Strahd.

It is the weapon of vengeance mentioned by Madame Eva in her tarot reading. It may be related to the words of the dragon who asked us to save his knights.

Strahd confirmed in person as well as in his diary that the blade once belonged to his brother Sergei. How it came to rest in Argynvostholt is a mystery, but the diary indicates that it was not yet broken when Sergei died, hinting that it perhaps had a second owner.

Strahd warned us not to assume that it would be our friend simply because it was his enemy, and told us that he would be watching us closely to see how it "infects" us. However, he states in his diary that he fears it as much as the sun itself and seeks to dispose of it, so this is likely a ruse.

Interestingly, the blade appears mostly the same in the Ethereal Plane as in the Material one.

Dren has nicknamed the sword "Brand".
