as bell looks into the curtain of fog to the west of yester hill: a white fortress on a hill above a great city. maybe a mile away. can hear echoes of a church bell. after entering the fog and only going a few feet, he could no longer see yester hill and became confused and exhausted as he tried to get out. heard voices, "the city, it's right there" "don't go, no further, turn back" "it was always this way, you are fated to die in these lands"
